Haiti

  • Haiti is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere 
  • 80% of the population lives below the World Bank’s definition of poverty
  • The average yearly income for a family in Haiti is about $300. Most families subsist on less than $3 per day.
  • Haiti is the most densely populated country in the Western Hemisphere. Over 8.7 million people live in an area roughly the size of the state of Maryland. 
  • The average life span is 57 years of age
  • Over two thirds of the adult population is unemployed
  • 45,000 children die each year from easily curable diseases such as dehydration, diarrhea and malnutrition
  • Nearly half of the population has no health care and more than 2/3 of the population has no access to drinking water  
  • 50% of the population is under the age of 18

  • Approximately 20,000 people live in the area of Ravine Trompette, Haiti
  • Ravine Trompette is located 30 miles west of Cap Hatien, near the town of Pilate in the mountainous terrain approximately 1,000 feet above sea level
  • Average rainfall is 50 inches per year with extreme temperatures of 95 degrees Fahrenheit in July and August and 40 degrees in January and February
